Wi crops in poor condition

MILWAUKEE (AP) _ The majority of Wisconsin's corn crop is in fair to very poor condition due to this summer's drought and a late start to planting this season.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says nearly 60 percent of corn falls into that category, while 28 percent is rated poor or very poor. On the other end of the spectrum, ten percent is rated excellent.

La Crosse got just 2.4 inches of rain between July1 and Sept. 10 _ the driest on record for that period.

Earlier this summer, flooding ruined some of the state's soybean crop and delayed planting. Then came drought conditions to complicate things in some counties. This week's agriculture report says 59 percent of Wisconsin's soybean crop is fair to very poor.
