Concerned citizens united together to stop an intoxicated driver along the very busy West Beltline Highway Wednesday afternoon. The suspect was weaving in traffic, speeding up and then slowing down as he drove east. At one point he rear-ended another vehicle before driving against the concrete in median in the middle of the highway. A tow truck driver said he first noticed the dangerous situation near Rimrock Road. He put on all of his truck's lights to try to warn other motorists to stay back. The tow truck driver and a man behind the wheel of a minivan worked in concert to box in the drunken man's car. Witnesses said as the suspect slowed down, a passenger – a woman - jumped out of the minivan, ran to the suspect's heavily damaged car, and put it in park. Citizens next teamed up to get him out of the vehicle, and push it out of traffic, to the right shoulder. When police arrived, the suspect was having a hard time staying awake and could barely walk. Once inside the back of a squad car, he appeared to pass out. The MPD would like to thank those citizens who intervened and stopped the driver before anyone was seriously injured.
